The depth that matters is internal depth — the front-to-back working space between the front and back uprights, where you and the bench actually go — not the rack’s overall footprint. Compact racks run roughly 16 to 24 inches of internal depth, which saves floor but can feel tight; deeper racks of 24 to 30 inches and up give room to bench inside comfortably and to walk a squat out and back in. The right answer is the most working depth you can fit without crowding the rest of your room.
Internal depth vs external footprint
Two numbers get called “depth,” and confusing them leads to bad buys. External footprint is the total floor the rack occupies front to back, including the steel of the uprights and any base feet or bracing that stick out. Internal depth is the usable space betweenthe front and back uprights — the room you actually lift in. The internal number is the one that decides whether you fit inside comfortably, because two racks with the same external footprint can offer noticeably different internal room depending on how the steel is arranged. When a spec sheet lists depth, check which figure it means, and prioritize the internal one. It’s a core part of working out what size power rack you need.
Compact racks (~16–24″ internal)
Shallow racks maximize floor savings, which is exactly why they exist — they let a cage fit into a garage corner or a spare bedroom where a deeper unit wouldn’t. The trade-off is that the working space can feel tight. You’re closer to both sets of uprights, there’s less room to walk a squat back in, and fitting a bench inside for pressing can be a squeeze. Deeper racks (24–30″+ internal)
More internal depth buys comfort and capability. With 24 to 30 inches or more between the uprights you can slide a bench fully inside, set the safeties in the right place, and press without any part of the movement spilling out the front of the cage. You also get room to walk a squat out after un-racking and step back in to re-rack safely, rather than lifting right on top of the front posts. That extra room is a real quality-of-life and safety upgrade, and it’s why fuller cages in our best power racklist tend to be deeper. The only cost is floor space — a deeper rack simply takes more of your room.
Depth and benching inside the cage
Depth is the single spec that decides whether you can bench press inside the power rack, which is one of the main reasons to own a cage in the first place. To bench safely inside, you need enough internal depth to fit the bench between the uprights andposition the safeties at the right height to catch a failed press. In a shallow rack the bench can crowd the uprights or push you toward pressing partly in front of the rack — which undermines the whole point of the safeties. If pressing inside the cage matters to you, treat internal depth as a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have.
Depth and safety reach
Depth interacts with safety coverage too. Safeties — the pins or straps that catch a failed lift — need to sit under the bar through the full range of the movement. In a squat you may drift slightly forward or back, and in a bench the bar travels down to your chest; the working area has to be deep enough that the safeties are actually beneath the bar where you fail, not somewhere you can’t reach. A rack that’s too shallow can force compromises in where the bench and bar sit relative to the pins. Depth, in other words, isn’t just about feeling roomy — it’s part of the safety system working the way it should.
Single vs double uprights and effective depth
One design detail changes how much depth you really get. Some cages use a single pair of front-to-back uprights, so the whole footprint is the working space. Others add a second set of posts — a “double” or extended-depth design — where the rear section is largely for plate storage or stability rather than lifting room. On those racks the advertised external depth can look generous while the actual lifting space between the working uprights is smaller. When you compare racks, find the distance between the uprights you’ll set your J-hooks and safeties on, because that’s the depth your body and bench occupy. A deeper-looking rack isn’t automatically a roomier one to lift in.
How to measure and choose
Start with your room, not the rack. Mark the floor space you can give a rack front to back, then leave clearance behind it if you’ll walk a squat back, and space in front to load plates and move around. Subtract that and you know the external footprint you can accommodate; from there, favor the rack with the most internaldepth that fits, since that’s the room you’ll live in.
