7 Barbell Buying Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Most bad barbell buys come down to the same handful of errors — chasing the wrong number, buying the wrong fitment, or matching the bar to a training style you don't do. Here's the checklist that avoids all of them.

Don’t overpay for a number you’ll never approach while ignoring the specs you’ll feel every rep.

3. Ignoring the finish in a garage

The finish is invisible in the product photo and obvious a year later. Measure before you buy, especially in a compact rack.

7. Overspending on a boutique bar you won’t feel

The floor for barbell quality is high now. A sub-$200 Olympic bar with a real rating and a rust-resistant finish takes most lifters well into intermediate training.
