The headline reason to buy cast iron is price per pound. Iron is cheaper to make than rubber-coated bumpers, so a cast-iron set gives you the most total weight for the money. If your training is squats, presses and deadlifts that you set down under control — not drop from overhead — you don’t need the drop-safety a bumper buys, and paying for it is money that could go toward more plates or a better bar. Thin iron: more weight per sleeve
