“Olympic barbell” is a slightly misleading name. It doesn’t mean a bar built only for the snatch and clean & jerk — it means a bar with 2-inch rotating sleevesthat take standard Olympic plates, as opposed to the old 1-inch “standard” bars. That’s the bar the overwhelming majority of home lifters want: a do-everything shaft, usually 28mm to 28.5mm, that squats, presses and pulls, and — if it has bearings rather than bushings — spins fast enough for the Olympic lifts too.

The upgrade decision here is almost never “which brand is best.” It’s a few concrete trade-offs: how much sleeve spin you actually need, whether you want a corrosion-resistant coating for a damp garage, and how aggressive you like the knurl. How to choose an Olympic barbell

Bushing vs bearing sleeves

Bushings are simple sleeves that spin on a low-friction bronze or brass surface. They give “enough” rotation for squats, presses and deadlifts and cost less. Bearings (needle or composite) spin fast and freely, which matters when the bar has to rotate under your hands during a clean or snatch. If you never do the Olympic lifts, a good bushing bar is the smarter spend; the bearing spin is money you won’t use.

Shaft diameter and whip

Olympic bars usually run 28mm to 28.5mm. Thinner shafts feel a touch more “whippy,” which Olympic lifters like; general lifters barely notice at home-gym loads. If you want a stiffer bar for heavy slow squats and deadlifts, that’s a power bar (usually 29mm), not an Olympic bar. Read our whip guide if the term is new.

Finish and knurl

Bare steel grips best but rusts; chrome, hard chrome, ceramic and Cerakote trade a little grip for corrosion resistance — worth it in a garage. Knurl aggressiveness is personal: medium suits most people, and dual knurl marks (both Olympic and IPF rings) let one bar cover both disciplines. Common questions

What's the difference between an Olympic barbell and a powerlifting bar?

An Olympic (or all-purpose) barbell typically has a 28–28.5mm shaft and enough sleeve spin for mixed training, including the Olympic lifts on a bearing model. A powerlifting bar is stiffer (usually 29mm), grips harder (aggressive knurl, often with a center knurl), and is built for maximal squats, benches and deadlifts. If you do a bit of everything, buy Olympic; if you only slow-lift heavy, buy a power bar.

How much should a good Olympic barbell weigh?

A men's Olympic barbell weighs 20kg (44 lb); a women's Olympic barbell weighs 15kg (33 lb) with a thinner 25mm shaft. Many budget bars are sold in pounds (e.g. 45 lb) and are close enough for home training. Specialty and technique bars vary — see our guide on whether all barbells weigh 20kg.

Do I need bearings or are bushings fine?

For squats, bench, deadlift and general training, bushings are completely fine and cheaper. Choose bearings only if you regularly perform cleans and snatches, where the sleeves must spin freely as the bar rotates in your hands.

Will a cheaper bar bend under heavy loads?

Every bar we list is rated to at least 700 lb, and most to 1,200–2,000 lb — far beyond what a home lifter loads. Permanent bending comes from dropping a loaded bar on safeties or pins, not from lifting within the rating. We show each bar's published capacity in its spec box.
