Shaft diameter is the thickness of the steel you actually grip, and it’s one of the biggest reasons two bars feel completely different in your hands. The common sizes are about 25mm for a women’s bar, 28mm for an Olympic/CrossFit bar, 28.5mm as an all-purpose middle ground, and 29mm for a powerlifting bar, with 32mm-plus reserved for specialty grip work. A thinner shaft is easier to wrap up and tends to flex more; a thicker shaft feels stiffer and firmer under a maximal load. What shaft diameter is — and why a half-millimeter matters
The shaft is the middle section of the bar between the sleeves, and its diameter is simply how thick that section is. It sounds like a rounding error — the difference between a 28mm and a 29mm bar is a single millimeter — but it changes three things you feel on every rep: how much the bar flexes (its whip), how secure it feels in a closed hand, and how it behaves under maximal weight. Because diameter is tied so closely to a bar’s purpose, it’s one of the first specs to read when you’re comparing the dimensions of a barbell. Two bars of the same length and weight can be built for opposite jobs purely because of a millimeter of shaft.
~25mm: the women’s bar
The thinnest common shaft is the roughly 25mm women’s bar. The smaller diameter isn’t about strength — it’s about fit. A thinner shaft lets a smaller hand wrap further around the bar, which makes the hook grip in the snatch and clean far more comfortable and gives a more secure hold on pulls. 28mm: the Olympic and CrossFit standard
A 28mm shaft is the classic men’s Olympic diameter, and it’s the go-to for weightlifting and mixed CrossFittraining. It’s thin enough to be friendly for smaller hands and for the fast lifts, and its relative slimness lets the bar store and release more whip — useful when you’re trying to ride the bar’s flex out of the bottom of a clean. The trade-off is that a thinner shaft made from the same steel is a touch less stiff, so under a truly maximal squat it can oscillate more than a lifter chasing a one-rep max would like. 28.5mm: the all-purpose middle ground
Many modern “do-everything” bars land on 28.5mm. It splits the difference — a hair stiffer than a pure Olympic shaft, a hair thinner and whippier than a dedicated power bar. If you squat, bench, deadlift and occasionally clean, and you only want to own one bar, 28.5mm is a smart default because it doesn’t commit hard to either extreme. It grips almost like a 28mm bar while giving you a touch more stiffness for slow-grind lifts. This is the shaft you’ll often find on hybrid bars aimed at the home gym owner who refuses to specialize.
29mm: the powerlifting bar
Dedicated power bars use a 29mm shaft, the thickest of the standard training diameters. More steel in the shaft means a stiffer bar with noticeably less whip, which is exactly what you want under a maximal squat or deadlift: you don’t want the bar bouncing and oscillating while you grind out a heavy single. The trade-off is grip — a thicker shaft gives your hand less to close around, so a 29mm bar with sharp knurl can feel more demanding on a heavy deadlift, especially for smaller hands. 32mm and up: specialty grip work
Beyond 29mm you leave general-purpose territory. Shafts of 32mm and thicker — axle bars and fat-grip tools — are built to overload the hands and forearms by being deliberately hard to hold. They’re grip-training implements, not everyday bars, and you buy one on purpose to make an exercise harder, not to make your main lifts feel better.
How to choose by training style
Work backward from your lifts. If you mostly do the Olympic lifts or high-rep barbell conditioning, a 28mm shaft’s whip and easy grip serve you well. If you’re a powerlifter chasing maximal squats and pulls, the stiffness of a 29mm bar is worth the harder grip. If you do a bit of everything and want one bar, 28.5mm is the sensible compromise, and smaller-handed lifters should weigh a thinner shaft regardless of category.
