The Best Powerlifting Barbells, Ranked on Stiffness and Knurl (2026)

A powerlifting bar is a stiffer, harder-gripping barbell built for one thing: maximal squats, benches and deadlifts. We ranked the ones sold on Amazon by shaft stiffness, knurl bite and center knurl — the specs that actually separate a power bar from an all-rounder.

A power bar isn’t just a stiffer barbell — it’s a bar built around a single job: moving the most weight you can grind through a squat, bench and deadlift. Where an Olympic barruns a 28–28.5mm shaft that gives a little under load, a true power bar is usually 29mm and deliberately rigid, so it sits dead in your hands instead of oscillating on a heavy attempt.

The other two differences are grip and markings. Power bars grip harder — an aggressive knurl that bites into your palms on a max deadlift — and most carry a center knurlso the bar won’t slide down your back under a loaded squat. They also use the wider IPF knurl rings rather than the Olympic marks. We’ve ranked the bars you can actually buy on Amazon on exactly those specs. For the full contrast, read Olympic vs powerlifting barbell, and what knurling actually is if the marks are new to you.

One caveat we repeat on every barbell page: the competition bars powerlifters obsess over — the Texas Power Bar, the Rogue Ohio Power Bar — are not sold on Amazon. We compare the two most-asked-about spec for spec on our Ohio Bar vs Texas Power Bar page, and the numbers behind the shaft are in our barbell tensile strength guide. The list below is the best of what ships to your cart today.

How to choose

How to choose a powerlifting barbell

Stiffness and shaft diameter

The defining power-bar trait is a stiff shaft. Most run 29mm, a full millimeter thicker than a 28mm Olympic bar, and that extra steel keeps the bar from whipping when you unrack a maximal squat or break a deadlift off the floor. A rigid bar is more predictable at the limit — there’s no rebound to time. Tensile strength matters here too: a higher-PSI shaft resists taking a permanent bend under repeated heavy loading. One bar on this list publishes a 205,000 PSI figure; read our tensile guidefor what those numbers do and don’t tell you.

Knurl and center knurl

Power bars grip harder than any other kind of barbell. A sharp, aggressive knurl digs into your hands so a heavy deadlift doesn’t roll out of your grip, and most carry a center knurl — a knurled band in the middle of the shaft — so a loaded squat bar won’t slide down your back. The trade-offs are real: a sharp knurl can tear soft hands on high-volume work, and center knurl scrapes your neck on high-bar squats. For the full breakdown of the pattern and the IPF versus Olympic ring spacing, see our knurling guide.

When a power bar is the wrong bar

If you clean, snatch or do any volume of Olympic lifting, a stiff, aggressively knurled power bar fights you — you want sleeve spin and a milder knurl instead. The honest split is simple: buy a power bar only if you almost exclusively slow-lift heavy. If you do a bit of everything, an all-rounder is the smarter spend. Our Olympic vs powerlifting guide walks the whole decision, and the full barbell hub lists every roundup.

Common questions

What makes a barbell a 'powerlifting' bar?

Three things: a stiff shaft (usually 29mm) that doesn't whip under maximal loads, an aggressive knurl that grips hard for heavy deadlifts, and a center knurl that keeps the bar planted on your back during squats. Most also use the wider IPF knurl-ring spacing rather than the Olympic marks. Anything softer and whippier is an all-purpose or Olympic bar.

Do I really need a center knurl?

It helps on heavy back squats by biting into your shirt so the bar can't slide down your back, and it's standard on competition power bars. The downside is that it can scrape your neck on high-bar squats and feel harsh on cleans. If you squat low-bar and pull heavy you'll want it; if you do a lot of front-rack or Olympic work you may not.

Is a stiffer 29mm bar better than a 28mm bar?

For maximal squats, benches and deadlifts, yes — a rigid 29mm shaft sits dead in your hands with no rebound to time. For the Olympic lifts, no: a bar that whips a little helps at the top of a clean or snatch. The right diameter depends on which lifts you actually train, not on which number is bigger.

Can I use a powerlifting bar for the Olympic lifts?

You can, but it fights you. The stiff shaft doesn't give you the whip Olympic lifters use, the aggressive knurl tears at your hands on high-rep work, and the center knurl catches on cleans. If you split your training between the two, an all-purpose Olympic bar or a dual-marked hybrid is the better single-bar choice.
