How to choose a safety squat bar
Capacity and bar weight
The rated capacityshould comfortably clear your working squat plus the bar. A 700 lb rating covers the vast majority of home squatters; 1,000–1,500 lb ratings are future-proofing you likely won’t need but won’t regret. Note that an SSB is heavier than a normal barbell — commonly 45–70 lb because of the yoke and camber — so your “empty bar” starting weight is higher than with a straight bar.
Camber and how it changes the squat
The defining feature is the cambered yoke: the handles and load sit forward of your neck. A more aggressive camber pitches you further forward, demanding more upper-back and core strength to stay upright — great carryover to the squat and to good posture, but a bigger jump from your straight-bar numbers. Expect to squat meaningfully less with an SSB than with a back-squat bar; that’s the tool working, not a defect.
Padding that lasts
You’re resting a loaded yoke on your traps and cervical spine, so padding matters more here than on any other bar. Look for dense, integrated shoulder and neck padding rather than a thin foam sleeve that compresses flat after a few heavy sessions. The commercial bars win on this; the budget bars are usable but expect the pad to wear.
Length, fitment and your rack
A full 7 ft, 2-inch Olympic SSB racks like a normal bar and takes the plates you already own. Shorter “attachment” SSBs cost less but may not sit in your J-hooks the same way — measure your rack’s inside width and hook spacing first. Whatever you buy, squat it in a rack with safeties; the forward camber makes a missed rep dump forward, and you want somewhere for it to land.
