The price tiers, from cheapest to premium
Racks fall into four rough brackets. Each one buys more steel, more adjustability and more capability than the last:
- Cheapest — a squat stand or two-post rack.A pair of uprights (or two independent posts) that hold the bar and, on better models, take a set of spotter arms. It is the least steel and the smallest footprint, which is exactly why it’s the entry point on price. It squats and presses; it doesn’t surround you the way a cage does.
- Budget — a full four-post cage. A true cage that surrounds the lifter, usually built from thinner 14-gauge steel with basic hardware and few or no attachments. This is where most first-time home buyers land, and for good reason — it delivers the core safety of a cage at the lowest cage price.
- Mid-range — an 11-gauge cage. Thicker steel, tighter hole spacing through the working zone, a higher rated capacity and often one or two attachments included or offered. This is the sweet spot for a serious home gym: noticeably more rigid and more expandable than a budget cage without commercial pricing.
- Premium / commercial.Heavy 11-gauge steel on large 3x3 uprights, tight Westside hole spacing, high capacity and integrated attachments — pulley towers, multiple safety options, dip and landmine hardware. Built for a gym floor or a home lifter who wants a forever rack. You’re paying for the last increments of rigidity, capacity and expandability.
What actually drives the price
Two cages that look identical in a photo can sit in different tiers, because price tracks a handful of specs. These are the ones to read on any spec sheet:
Steel gauge (11 vs 14)
Gauge is the thickness of the tube wall, and it’s the single biggest driver. Lower numbers mean thicker steel: 11-gauge is thicker and stiffer than 14-gauge, so an 11-gauge rack costs more to make and feels more solid under a heavy bar. Upright dimensions (2x2 vs 2x3 vs 3x3)
The size of the square tube matters alongside the gauge. Common upright sizes run from 2x2 inch on lighter racks, through 2x3, up to 3x3on heavier and commercial cages. Bigger tube is more rigid and generally takes beefier attachments, and it costs more — both for the steel itself and because the matching hardware is larger.
Hole spacing
Cheaper racks space their holes further apart; better racks use tighter (often “Westside”) 1-inch spacing through the bench and rack-height zoneso you can set J-hooks and safeties exactly where you want them. That tighter machining costs more, and it’s a genuine usability upgrade — it’s the difference between a safety that catches a failed bench just below your chest and one that’s an awkward inch off.
Included attachments
Many racks are priced as a bare cage, with the extras sold separately. Pulley and lat towers, additional spotter arms, dip handles, a landmine and plate storage all add up — often to as much as the rack itself. Rated capacity, brand and warranty
Higher-tier racks carry a higher rated load capacity, which reflects the heavier build. You also pay for the brand’s support and warranty — established makers price in available replacement parts, responsive service and long or lifetime coverage on the frame. For a piece of equipment you load a barbell into and trust with your body, that support has real value, even if it doesn’t show up in a photo. Where a maker publishes a capacity figure, treat it as a ceiling and check the exact spec on the listing rather than assuming.
Add-ons: budget for the whole setup, not just the cage
The sticker price of the cage is rarely the whole spend. A pulley system, extra safeties, plate storage, a bench and the weight itself all sit on top. The common mistake is to spend the entire budget on the frame and have nothing left for the parts that make it usable and safe. A better approach is to decide the full setup first — cage, safeties, any attachments you truly need, and a solid value pick if the budget is tight — then work backwards to the tier you can afford across all of it.

If you’re equipping a home gym on a budget, a well-built four-post cage — anchored, with a proper set of safeties — covers ordinary training safely, and stepping up to 11-gauge steelis the upgrade that matters most if you lift heavy or want to expand later.
