Bounce

Bounce is where the material really shows its personality. When a loaded bar hits the floor, the plates flex and rebound — and how much they rebound decides whether the bar settles or skitters away from you. As a general rule, urethane and quality virgin rubber tend to have a deader, lower bouncethan soft, cheap recycled rubber, which can spring back higher and less predictably. A controlled, low bounce is what you want: the bar drops, absorbs, and stays put instead of bouncing toward your shins or across a cramped garage. That said, bounce isn’t purely a rubber-versus-urethane question. It also depends on the plate’s durometer (how hard the compound is), its thickness, and its weight — a firm virgin rubber plate can feel very controlled, while a soft budget plate of the same weight bounces more. Smell and off-gassing

This is the factor people underestimate until they’ve lived with it. Rubber can smell, and recycled crumb rubber is the worst offender— a fresh set can fill a closed room with a strong rubber odor that off-gasses for weeks and fades slowly. In a well-ventilated commercial gym that’s a non-issue; in a sealed garage, a basement, or a spare bedroom, it can be genuinely unpleasant for a while. Virgin rubber generally smells less and settles faster than recycled, but it can still have a break-in odor. Urethane essentially doesn’t smell at all, which is one of the quiet reasons people pay up for it in a home setting. Color retention and floor marking

Colored plates (the standard red/blue/yellow/green weight coding, or an all-black set) hold their look better in urethane, which resists fading and scuffing, so a urethane set tends to stay sharp-looking longer. Colored rubber can fade or dull over time, and cheaper rubber shows scuffs more readily. If a clean, color-stable set matters to you aesthetically or for quick weight identification, that’s a point for urethane. The second is floor marking. Thickness and loadable space

Material affects how thick a plate is, and thickness affects how much you can fit on the bar. Because urethane is denser and more structurally capable, urethane plates can often be made slightly thinner than an equivalent rubber plate of the same weight — and thinner plates mean more weight fits on the loadable sleeve before you run out of room. That difference is modest at typical home loads but real if you ever plan to load a bar heavily. Within rubber itself, cheaper recycled plates are frequently the thickest of all, because looser, softer material needs more of it to hit a given weight and survive drops. Cost: urethane is a clear premium

Recycled rubber is the cheapest, virgin rubber sits in the middle, and urethane is the top of the range. You’re paying for the more expensive polymer and the more demanding manufacturing behind it, and that premium buys the durability, low smell, color stability, and controlled bounce described above. Urethane is the upgrade for high-use or commercial settings: gyms with constant traffic, lifters who drop heavy every single day, shared spaces where smell and appearance matter, or anyone who simply wants the longest-lived, lowest-maintenance plate and isn’t bothered by the price.
