A barbell is a handful of measurements, and two of them decide whether the bar even fits your gym.Length and the span between the sleeves determine whether it racks; shaft diameter determines how it feels in your hands. Everything else — sleeve length, sleeve diameter — follows from the Olympic standard. This is the plain reference: the numbers, what they mean, and how to check a bar before you buy.
The numbers, by bar type
A dedicated power baris the same length and weight as a men’s Olympic bar but a touch thicker at about 29mmand stiffer, which is why it feels “deader” under a heavy squat.
Length and the span between the sleeves
The measurement that decides fitmentisn’t the overall length — it’s the distance between the inner edges of the sleeves, about 1,310mmon a standard bar. That span has to clear the inside of your rack’s uprights so the sleeves rest outside them. Full-size power racks and squat stands are built around this, so a standard 7 ft bar drops right in. A shorter 6 ft barhas a narrower span and can sit awkwardly — or not seat at all — in a wide full-size rack, which is why 6 ft bars suit dedicated small-space setups more than standard cages.
Shaft diameter and how it feels
The shaft diameter is what you feel in your hands. A 28–28.5mmmen’s bar is the all-purpose sweet spot; a 29mm power bar is thicker and stiffer for heavy slow lifts; a 25mmwomen’s bar is easier for smaller hands to grip securely. Thinner shafts also flex more — see our whip guide — which Olympic lifters like and powerlifters avoid. Diameter is personal, but for most people 28–28.5mm is right.
Sleeves: what makes a bar “Olympic”
The 2-inch (50mm) rotating sleevesare what define an Olympic bar — they take 2-inch plates and spin so the bar can rotate under your hands. A “standard” 1-inch barhas non-rotating 1-inch sleeves and takes 1-inch plates; it’s lighter-duty and largely a legacy format. Unless you already own 1-inch plates, buy Olympic. Sleeve length matters too: a longer loadable sleeve fits more plates, which matters for heavy deadlifts loaded with thin iron.
How to check a bar fits your rack
- Measure your rack’s inside width (between the uprights).
- Confirm the bar’s span between sleeves comfortably exceeds it, so the sleeves rest outside the uprights.
- Check overall length against your room — a 7 ft bar needs about that much clear width to load and unload.
- If you run bumpers, make sure the loadable sleeve length holds the plates you need.
