The second is chipped or flaking coatingon painted, powder-coated, or e-coated plates, where knocks and rack contact wear the finish back to metal. Both are cosmetic — a rusty, scuffed plate still weighs what it weighs and loads exactly the same. The one genuine failure is a cracked cast plate, which is almost always caused by dropping loaded iron onto a hard floor. Cast iron is brittle, and a sharp impact can split it or break a chunk off the edge. That is a retire-it problem; rust and chips are not.
How to extend iron life
Because iron’s weaknesses are moisture and impact, extending its life comes down to a few habits. Keep plates dry— a garage or basement with swings in humidity is the usual culprit, so a dehumidifier, a rust-inhibiting wipe-down, or simply storing them away from damp concrete goes a long way. Dropping from overhead onto a hard floorwithout a platform is the big one — bumpers are built to be dropped, but onto matting or a lifting platform that shares the load, not onto bare concrete that sends the shock straight back into the hub and rubber. A plate is just ugly— and completely safe to keep using — when it has surface rust, faded or chipped paint, scuffs, or a worn coating. None of that changes the weight or the safety; it’s patina.
