Why there’s no standard weight

It’s the same situation as the trap bar— a specialty bar with no fixed weight, where you have to read the spec.
Why it’s heavier than a straight bar
An SSB carries everything a straight bar has and then some. On top of the shaft, it adds a cambered (bent) bar that hangs the load forward, a shoulder-and-neck yoke that bears on you, padding on that yoke, and forward handlesyou hold in front. All of that is extra steel, so the bar weighs more than a plain 20kg shaft — typically noticeably more. The typical range
Because it varies, treat any figure as a ballpark until you check your model:
- Many SSBs land in the roughly 45–70 lb range.
- Heavier, premium bars — substantial yokes, thick padding, a stiff shaft — can run higher. The Bells of Steel SSB 4.0, for example, publishes a bar weight of about 45.6 lb.
- Lighter budget bars sit toward the bottom of the range.

Why the weight matters for your load
The bar is part of your total load, so a heavier SSB means the same plates give you a heavier lift. If your SSB weighs 55 lb, that’s 11 lb more than a 44 lb straight bar before you add a single plate— and it changes how the bar feels beyond the number, because the forward camber shifts weight in front of you. So don’t expect your SSB squat to match your back squat: the different bar weight and load position both make it its own lift. Log it separately.
How to find your bar’s real weight
Two reliable ways. First, read the manufacturer’s specfor your exact model — the bar weight is on the product page (our roundup pulls this together). Second, if it’s not listed or you bought it used, weigh it: stand on a bathroom scale, then step on holding the bar, and subtract. Either way, don’t default to the 20kg assumption — SSBs vary too much, and getting the number right keeps your training log honest.
