The shoulder-friendliness is the headline

The single biggest reason lifters reach for an SSB is that the straight-bar rack position hurts. How it changes the squat

The SSB is cambered— the yoke offsets the load slightly forward of your spine. That does two things. Carryover and specificity

Which should you use?

  • Reach for the SSB if the straight-bar rack position hurts your shoulders, elbows or wrists; if you want a stronger upright squat and upper back; or if you squat alone and value the easier forward bail (in a rack with safeties).
  • Stick with the straight bar as your main lift if you have healthy shoulders and compete in the back squat, or simply want the classic movement.
  • Own both if you can: an SSB is one of the most useful specialty bars precisely because it lets you keep squatting heavy when a straight bar would be shut down by a joint issue.
