1. Bumper or iron: do you drop the bar?

Plates come in 2-inch (Olympic) and 1-inch (standard) hole sizes, and they fit different bars. 4. Weight tolerance: how accurate
Economy iron can drift several percent from its stated weight, which quietly unbalances your loading and muddies your PRs. A published tolerance(for example 2%) keeps your working weights honest and your two sides matched. It matters most to lifters chasing precise progression — it’s the same logic behind calibrated plates. 5. Thickness: how much fits per sleeve
Thinner plates let you load more weight per sleevebefore you run out of room. Thin iron beats wide rubber bumpers here, and competition-style plates are thinner still (at a price). 6. Coating: how long they last clean
