“Plate size” is really three separate specs — hole, diameter and thickness — and each one decides a different thing.Get the hole wrong and the plate won’t fit your bar at all; get the diameter wrong and your deadlift starts from the wrong height; ignore thickness and a heavy load runs out of room on the sleeve. Here’s what each one means and how to buy around it.
1. Hole size: Olympic vs standard
This is the one that decides whether a plate fits your bar at all. There are two systems:
Olympic (2-inch)is what every serious bar and plate uses today — every bar in our roundups takes 2-inch plates. Standard (1-inch)plates belong to old-school lighter bars and don’t fit an Olympic sleeve. 2. Diameter: the 450mm rule
The diameter of the big plates sets how high the bar sits off the floor. The standard is that a 45 lb / 20 kg plate is about 450mm (17.7 in) across, which puts a loaded bar at the correct pull height for deadlifts, cleans and snatches. This matters because your setup and leverages assume that height:
- Bumper and competition plates hold ~450mm closely across the heavy denominations, so the bar height stays constant no matter which big plate is on.
- Some budget cast-iron 45s come a little smaller, which lowers the bar slightly — usually fine, but if you pull from a standard height it changes the range of motion a touch.
- Lighter plates (10 lb and under) are smaller across on purpose; only the big plates need to be full diameter.
If you deadlift from the floor and want a consistent, standard bar height, buy full-diameter big plates — another reason many home lifters use bumpers for the heavy denominations.
3. Thickness: sleeve space is finite
The bar’s loadable sleeve has a fixed length, so plate thickness sets how much weight fits. Thin plates let you load more before you run out of room; thick plates fill the sleeve fast. The order, roughly thinnest to thickest:
- Thin competition plates (steel or thin bumpers): the most weight per inch of sleeve.
- Standard steel / cast-iron plates: moderate thickness, good value.
- Budget rubber bumpers: the thickest — drop-safe, but a heavy all-bumper load eats sleeve length quickly.

Which denominations to buy
Standard Olympic denominations are 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb(or 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25 kg). Most home lifters skip the 35s and build around pairs of 45s plus 25/10/5/2.5 for increments, adding fractional (1.25 lb or smaller) plates for pressing progress. The quick checklist
- Hole: 2-inch Olympic to match a modern bar. Non-negotiable.
- Diameter: full-size (~450mm) big plates if you deadlift from the floor.
- Thickness: mind it only if you load very heavy on thick plates.
- Denominations: plenty of 45s, plus small plates and fractionals to progress.
