How to Measure a Barbell

Five measurements tell you almost everything about a bar: total length, loadable sleeve length, shaft diameter, the span between the collars, and the weight. Here's how to take each one and what it tells you.

A barbell is a handful of numbers, and once you know how to take them, you can size up any bar in a few minutes.Whether you’re checking that a new bar fits your rack, working out how much plate you can load, or inspecting a used bar before you hand over cash, five measurements cover almost everything: total length, loadable sleeve length, shaft (grip) diameter, the span between the inside collars, and the weight. None of it needs specialist tools — a tape measure, a caliper, and a scale will do — and each number answers a specific, practical question about how the bar will fit your space and feel in your hands.

What you’ll need

Keep it simple. A steel tape measure handles total length, sleeve length, and the collar-to-collar span. A caliper — digital or dial — handles shaft diameter, where the gap between one bar and the next is a single millimeter and a tape simply can’t resolve it. A scale (a floor scale, or even a luggage scale for lighter bars) gives you the weight. A flat, level surface helps for the diameter and straightness checks. That’s the whole kit. If you only buy one thing, buy the caliper: it’s the tool most people don’t already own and the one that turns a vague “feels about right” into an actual reading.

Total length

Total length is the full end-to-end measurement of the bar, sleeve tip to sleeve tip, and it’s the first thing to check because it decides whether the bar even fits your rack. Lay the bar on the floor or rest it in the rack, run your tape from the outermost edge of one sleeve to the outermost edge of the other, and read it straight. The reference points are easy to remember: a full-size men’s Olympic bar is about 7 ft (roughly 2.13 m), and a women’s Olympic bar is shorter at about 6.5 ft (roughly 2.01 m). Shorter specialty and “shorty” bars exist for tight spaces, so a bar that reads well under 6.5 ft is likely one of those rather than a standard Olympic bar. The number that matters for your gym is how the total length compares to the inside width of your rack’s uprights — the bar has to span them with sleeve to spare on each side. Loadable sleeve length

The sleeve is the thick rotating end of the bar where plates go, and its loadablelength is how much of that sleeve you can actually cover with plates — not the whole sleeve, but the usable portion between the inside collar and the point where the sleeve ends or an end cap gets in the way. Measure it by running your tape from the face of the inner collar (where the first plate seats) out to the usable end of the sleeve. This is arguably the most practical number on the bar, because it caps how much weight you can hang on it regardless of how strong you are. It matters most with thick bumper plates, which swallow sleeve length far faster than thin cast-iron plates, so a bar that loads plenty of iron can run out of room with bumpers. Two bars of identical total length can offer different loadable sleeve, so if you plan to go heavy, this is a spec worth taking yourself rather than trusting a photo. Shaft (grip) diameter

Shaft diameter is the thickness of the bar where you grip it, and it’s the one measurement that genuinely needs a caliper — the differences are that fine. Open the caliper’s jaws around the bare shaft, close them gently until they just contact the steel, and read the millimeter value. Take it on the plain part of the shaft, away from any knurling ridges, since knurling can throw the reading off. Common reference points: men’s Olympic bars typically run around 28 to 29 mm, women’s Olympic bars around 25 mm, and stiffer power-oriented bars sit toward the thicker end of that range. A single millimeter sounds like nothing, but it changes how the bar feels: thinner shafts are easier to wrap your hand around and tend to have more “whip,” while thicker shafts feel more rigid and secure under a heavy squat or press. The span between the collars

Between the two sleeves runs the shaft, and the distance between the inside collars— the raised shoulders that stop the plates from sliding inward — is the space you actually have to grip and to rest the bar on a rack. Measure it from the inner face of one collar to the inner face of the other. On a standard Olympic bar this span is commonly around 51 to 52 in (roughly 1.31 m), which is why plates and racks made to the same standard interchange so cleanly. This number tells you two useful things: how wide you can set your hands (relevant for a wide snatch grip or a wide bench), and whether the bar will seat properly on your rack’s hooks or j-cups, which have to land on the shaft inside the collars. Most bars carry marks at standardized points that give you a repeatable reference for hand placement, so you set the same grip width every session without measuring each time.

Weighing the bar

Last, the weight. The cleanest way is to put the whole bar on a floor scale, but a hanging luggage scale works for lighter bars if you support the bar level and let it settle before reading. The familiar reference is that a full-size men’s Olympic bar is 20 kg (about 44 lb) and a women’s bar is 15 kg (about 33 lb)— but don’t assume, because bar weight varies more than people expect. Budget bars are sometimes built to a 45 lb spec rather than a true 20 kg, specialty bars (thick-handled, safety-squat, trap) can weigh well beyond that, and technique or training bars weigh far less. Taken together, these five measurements let you place any bar without guesswork. Length and the collar-to-collar span tell you whether the bar fits your rack and how wide you can grip. Loadable sleeve length tells you how much plate you can hang before you run out of room. Shaft diameter tells you how the bar will feel in your hands and, along with length, whether it’s a men’s or women’s bar. The weight anchors your loading math. Common questions

What tools do I need to measure a barbell accurately?

For most measurements a tape measure and a level floor are enough: total length, loadable sleeve length, and the span between the inside collars all come off a tape. The one exception is shaft diameter, where the difference between a 28mm and a 29mm bar is a single millimeter, so you want a caliper for that reading. A bathroom or luggage scale covers the weight. None of it is specialist kit, but a caliper is the piece most people don't already own and the one that pays off most.

A short or crowded sleeve caps your loading no matter how strong you are, and it matters most with thick bumper plates, which eat sleeve space fast. Two bars with the same overall length can offer different usable sleeve, so if you plan to load heavy or run wide bumpers, measure the loadable portion of each sleeve, not just the bar end to end.

How do I measure a used bar before buying it?

Check length and shaft diameter first to confirm it's the type advertised, then look at the sleeves. Spin each sleeve by hand to feel whether it rotates freely or binds, and roll the shaft on a flat surface to spot a bend. Measure the sleeve diameter too: a genuine Olympic bar takes plates with a 2" (about 50mm) center hole, and a standard bar uses a roughly 1" sleeve, so this decides which plates will even fit.
