A lat pulldown attachment is a cable-and-pulley system, almost always plate-loaded on a home rack, that adds lat pulldowns and usually low rows to a power rack that otherwise only presses and squats. It fills the biggest gap a bare cage leaves — vertical and horizontal pulling — in the same footprint. The main choice is whether to buy a cage with it built in or bolt a separate tower on later.
The gap a bare rack leaves
A power rackis superb at the pressing and squatting lifts and, with a pull-up bar, covers vertical pulling with your bodyweight. What it can’t do on its own is loaded, scalable pulling— lat pulldowns for people who can’t yet do pull-ups, and cable rows for the mid-back. A lat pulldown attachment adds exactly that, which is why it’s one of the most popular upgrades on the rack-attachment menu.
How the plate-loaded version works
On home racks the attachment is nearly always plate-loaded rather than a commercial weight stack. You hang your own weight plateson a carriage or pin, and a cable runs over pulleys at the top of the rack to a high bar (the pulldown) and often down to a low pulley (the row). Instead of moving a pin in a stack, you add or remove plates to change the weight. It’s a simple, robust system with no proprietary parts — and it uses the plates you already own.
Integrated cage vs bolt-on tower
You can get cables two ways. An integrated cagebuilds the pulldown and low row into the rack from the factory — the SPORTSROYALS cage is a good example, and the RUNFREELYships with a pulley too. That’s usually the cleaner, better-value route if you know you want cables, because the geometry is designed in. The honest trade-offs
A plate-loaded pulldown isn’t a commercial machine. The pulley feels less smooth than a pin-and-stack unit, and changing weight means swapping plates rather than flicking a pin. It also needs ceiling clearance, since the tower usually rises above the rack — check that against our ceiling-height guide. None of that stops it building your lats and upper back effectively; it just means you’re trading some convenience and polish for fitting a full pulling station into one rack.
